Dr. Ashequl Islam is an interventional cardiologist in a large tertiary care academic hospital for the last 16 years. He is currently the Associate Chief of Cardiology and Director of Heart and Vascular Strategy and the Valve Program at Baystate Health System. He is currently a Professor of Medicine and Surgery and Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Director at University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School – Baystate.
He has led the TAVR and then the Valve Program at Baystate since its inception in 2012 and innovated several procedure techniques and care models to propel the program to the national stature. The program was designated as ‘High Performing’ in TAVR among all US centers two years in a row. Dr. Islam is a founding member and the President of “New England Valve and Structural Heart Foundation”, a non-for-profit and educational consortium of all the New England regional valve and structural programs.
Dr. Islam has written and peer-reviewed several professional society practice guidelines and published more than 30 peer reviewed manuscripts. He has participated in more than 50 multi-center clinical trials as the site principal investigator or sub-investigator over the last 16 years including national randomized clinical trial on TAVR versus SAVR in patients at low risk for surgery and TAVR in patients with symptomatic moderate aortic stenosis. He is a fellow of American College of Cardiology and Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions.
